What is the collaborative investigation?
The collaborative investigation is the biggest new aspect of the HMS syllabus. This is a mandatory project that must be assessed. Students are meant to be able to choose a topic from either of the core modules, research and investigate this topic collaboratively in small groups, and then present their findings. During the investigation, they are meant to maintain a portfolio, present a report, and write a statement of learning. While they are doing that, we as teachers need to support and assess everything, including:
- assessing the process
- assessing the product
- having a group mark and
- have an individual mark.
- Oh... and we have to assess the collaborative outcome. 🙂
Included in the workshop
Learn everything you need to know to design, assess and teach the collaborative investigation. You will be given templates, example units of work, example assessment tasks, a draft student workbook and engaging ideas to use in your lessons.

"It is a great workshop that I strongly recommend. I achieved a great deal more from this PL in comparison to other organisations. Thank you "
"The confusion of the syllabus has been made clearer and been explicitly presented through samples of work. Exceptional coaching of the syllabus and how to apply it to explicit teaching and learning! "
"An outstanding presentation. Very informative. "
"I didn’t really know much at all or how it (the collaborative investigation) could be formatted in a classroom. Now I understand it and feel confident in facilitating it."
"I was apprehensive about teaching a new syllabus, now through better understanding and confidence I am eager to teach it. I fully understand how to approach it in programming and unit outline and know now what to expect. No surprises. "
"Really enjoyed this workshop, some great activities to do with students."
"This TPl provided Time! Time away from the million distractions of work to actually look at and pull apart the new syllabus. Other Teachers! A room full of PDHPE teachers talking and working together to figure out how this syllabus will look at the classroom level."
"This PL is NEXT LEVEL. I leave the sessions with a renewed vigour to teach."
"Excellent knowledge of content and explained well. Approachable nature and relevant feedback provided when needed. Thanks Team!"
"As a first-timer teaching stage 6 - this course not only developed my knowledge of how to plan and teach the syllabus content in a more meaningful and engaging manner but also developed my confidence in my ability to do so. Highly Recommend."
"I have taught the HSC three times now and I am still finding new ways of teaching and learning through these workshops. There were lots of fun activities that will help me to engage my students again. It did make me feel a little guilty about not doing lots of innovative things in my classroom but I felt like I now have more tools and motivation to better my teaching. Thanks Team!"
